BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police here have crippled a drug syndicate with the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of 300kg of ganja worth RM750,000.
Perlis police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Surina Saad said the 41-year-old man and 37-year-old Indonesian woman were arrested during a raid conducted at a house in Taman Impian here at about 9pm on July 16.
She added that the raid was conducted with help from Bukit Aman and Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.
"A check in the house found about 300kg of ganja worth at least RM750,000 which was hidden in the house by the suspects," she said at a press conference at the Central Seberang Prai police headquarters on Thursday (July 21).
DCP Surina said the ganja was believed to have been smuggled from Thailand to Perlis in a van.
She said checks found that both suspects were not married although they lived together in the rented house.
"During the raid, police confiscated a motorcycle worth RM2,800," she said, adding that the drugs seized could have been used by 600,000 drug addicts.
DCP Surina said the ganja seized was meant for distribution in the Klang Valley and Penang was used as the transit point for the syndicate before distributing the drugs.
She said police were still investigating when the syndicate began operations and added that the suspects have been remanded for seven days until July 23.
She also said that 364kg of ganja has been confiscated and 16 people have been arrested since January in the state.
"We will continue to ensure that the drug smuggling activities will be stopped completely and those responsible will be brought to justice," she added.
