Police chief suspended over alleged fatal shootout

THE National Police have suspended internal affairs chief Insp Gen Ferdy Sambo over an ongoing probe into an alleged shootout between two subordinates at his residence that left one offficer dead.

Brig Nopryansyah Yosua Hutabarat was reportedly killed in an exchange of fire with second agent (Bharada) E at Ferdy’s residence in Jakarta on July 8.

Bharada E was there as Ferdy’s personal secretary, while Yosua was a chauffeur to Ferdy’s wife.

National Police chief Gen Listyo Sigit Prabowo announced Ferdy’s suspension on Monday, with his deputy Comr Gen Gatot Eddy Pramono temporarily assuming the post.

The National Police have repeatedly stated that Bharada E was acting in self-defence when he shot Yosua, 28, who outranked him.

They also said Yosua initiated the shootout by being the first to draw and fire his weapon at Bharada E.

But Yosua’s family has filed a report accusing E of premeditated murder, citing discrepancies between the information provided by police on his death and the wounds found on his body. — The Jakarta Post/ANN
