Cops arrest Puchong man for allegedly insulting Islam

SERDANG: Police have arrested a 39-year-old man for allegedly insulting Islam.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm A. A. Anbalagan said the suspect was arrested at a house at Batu 8 at Bukit Kuchai, Puchong.

"I can confirm that the suspect was arrested at around 12.30pm in connection with a police report lodged at the Cyberjaya police station on July 17.

"The case is being investigated by the Bukit Aman CID Special Investigations Unit," he said when contacted on Sunday (July 17)

He said the case was classified as causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, or prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on grounds of religion and misuse of network facilities.

The first is an offence under Section 298A of the Penal Code while the second is a crime under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Videos and pictures of a man with a bloodied mouth and nose have been circulated on social media and WhatsApp.

Earlier, the man had allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad in a video which was circulated on social media.

A group of people confronted the man at a house at Bukit Kuchai, Puchong and a physical altercation was believed to have occurred there.

ACP Anbalagan said police were conducting investigations into whether the man was beaten.

"We urge the public not to take matters into their own hands and allow the authorities to conduct investigations," he said.
