Covid-19: Daily cases dip below 3,000 mark with 2,799 new infections detected


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia detected 2,799 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday (July 9) bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4,592,710 since the pandemic began, says the Health Ministry.

According to the ministry's CovidNow portal, 2,797 of Saturday's new cases were local transmissions while there were two imported cases.

The portal also reported that there are currently 35,323 active Covid-19 infections in the country, with 96.6% of patients, or 34,107 individuals, observing home quarantine and a further 0.1%, or 19 people, seeking treatment at quarantine and treatment centres nationwide.

There are 1,156 Covid-19 patients, or 3.3% of the total, warded in hospitals and 41 individuals have been admitted to intensive care units (ICU) nationwide.

Of Saturday's ICU cases, 15 are unventilated while 26 require ventilator support.

CovidNow also reported that 2,666 recovered from Covid-19 infections on Saturday, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 4,521,578 since the pandemic began.

Malaysia's current overall ICU utilisation rate stands at 60.7% while the utilisation rate for Covid-19 patients is at 10%.

Meanwhile, according to the Health Ministry's GitHub data repository, eight deaths due to Covid-19 were reported on Saturday, bringing the total number of fatalities in Malaysia to 35,809 since the pandemic began.

Three deaths due to Covid-19 were reported in Selangor, while there two in Melaka. Kedah, Perak and Sabah recorded one death due to Covid-19 each.
