Motorcyclist killed in Tawau accident

KOTA KINABALU: A 28-year-old motorcyclist was killed in an accident along Jalan Merotai/Bombalai in Tawau on Tuesday (July 5).

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the accident involved two other vehicles.

In a statement on Wednesday (July 6), he said the 8.20am accident involved a car from Felda Umas heading towards Bombalai, a four-wheel drive (4WD) driven by a 53-year-old man and the victim's motorcycle, both coming from Tawau in the direction of Merotai.

He said the accident occurred when the victim tried to overtake the 4WD, only to hit its rear end and skid into the opposite lane.

According to ACP Jasmin, the 29-year-old motorist in the oncoming lane could not avoid hitting the motorcyclist, who was dragged for 25m after the impact.

"The victim died at the scene,” ACP Jasmin said, adding that the two motorists were unhurt.

Investigation of the case is being carried out under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, he added.
