Johor Opposition chief to contest Dewan Rakyat seat in GE15

JOHOR BARU: Johor Opposition chief Liew Chin Tong (pic) has announced that he will contest a Parliamentary seat in the next general election.

However, the Perling assemblyman said that it was still up in the air when asked if he would be a candidate for the Iskandar Puteri seat

The state DAP chairman said there were four deciding factors on the question of which parliamentary seat a party member is fielded in as a candidate in the 15th General Election.

“It is not a matter of personal preference. The decision depends on the DAP central leadership’s strategy, the state leadership as well as our arrangements with the other parties in the Pakatan Harapan coalition,” said Liew.

“Apart from that, it also depends on the competition’s line-up,” he added when speaking to reporters after attending a coffee shop talk programme with Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang in Taman Universiti on Saturday (July 2).

Liew was the Bukit Bendera MP after winning in the 12th General Election in 2008 and in the 13th General Election in 2013, he was the Kluang MP.

He lost to MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong when he contested the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat in the14th General Election in 2018.

On a separate matter, Liew asked Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi to explain how he plans to increase the state’s economic growth by 7% annually to achieve a gross domestic product (GDP) value of RM260bil.

“The GDP is not everything but it is significant and important to Johor because the mentri besar has highlighted the matter in his mandate ceremony speech on June 14,” said Liew.

“I have asked him to explain his plans to the State Assembly as we have entered the second half of the year,” he added.
