IPOH: A housebreaking suspect escaped police custody on the way to a Taiping Magistrate's Court – but his freedom was short-lived.

The 30-year-old suspect was arrested within 24 hours of his escape near Ulu Sepetang, according to Taiping OCPD Asst Comm Osman Mamat.

ACP Osman said the suspect managed to flee while being transported to court from the Selama district police headquarters at 8.05am on Wednesday (June 29) and was arrested in Redang Panjang, Selama at about 2.45am on Thursday (June 30).

"Following the incident, two investigation papers under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code were opened.

"Police acted swiftly to arrest the man in a wooden hut in Redang Panjang in less than 24 hours," he said in a statement.

"The man will be remanded for four days until July 3 to facilitate investigations."

ACP Osman said the man had two previous offences, one committed in Taiping and the other in Ayer Keroh, Melaka.

"The police would like to advise the people not to create speculation that could cause public unrest.

"The people are also urged to be smart social media users and not use the platform to cause unrest and disrupt harmony," he added.
