17 arrested for brawl outside pub in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested 17 people involved in a brawl outside a pub in Sandakan, after a video of the incident went viral.

Sandakan deputy police chief Supt Mohd Hamizi Halim said police identified the suspects, aged between 19 and 40, through the video and arrested them.

"They are currently under remand," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 14).

He said preliminary investigations showed the fight took place on Saturday (June 11) in front of an entertainment centre at Bandar Utama along Batu 6.

Police were still ascertaining the exact cause that led to the fight which is believed to be between two groups.

The 27-second video was circulated late Sunday (June 11) in social media groups including WhatsApp and Facebook.

Supt Mohd Hamizi said following this, a CID team moved in and arrested the suspects, who were all living within the vicinity.

He said the case would be investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine or both, if convicted.
