Cops arrest 21 in operation against motorcycle thieves

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Two women are among the 21 motorcycle thieves arrested in a series of ra raids following a spike in motorcycle theft cases in the Central Seberang Prai area.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Shafee Abd Samad said 37 motorcycles were reported stolen between April and May.

He said the suspects were believed to be members of five motorcycle theft syndicates.

“Intelligence by a special team found that the syndicates namely Geng Kupang, Geng Humairah, Geng Chot, Geng Pondok and Geng Junjong have been responsible for motorcycle theft in the district and other parts of Penang.

“Some of the suspects have past criminal records such as motorcycle theft, house break-in and drug abuse,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 9).

ACP Shafee said during the operations, police recovered 12 motorcycles, three chassis and an engine.

He said the suspects were being investigated under Section 379 A of the Penal Code for motor vehicle theft.
