Mother, grandaunt remanded for four days for alleged child abuse

GEORGE TOWN: The mother and grandaunt of two children who were allegedly abused have been remanded for four days, says George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong.

Earlier, the two children with bruises and injuries on their body and face were rescued by police from a unit at the Rifle Range flats here.

The five-year-old girl and three-year-old boy have been sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

The children's mother, 28, and grandaunt, 52, were then detained to facilitate investigations into the suspected abuse.

On Friday (May 27), he said a police team from the George Town district headquarters moved into the unit at 11.15am after receiving a police report at 8am.

"The complainant said he had seen pictures of the two children on social media, believing that they could be abuse victims with injuries on their faces.

"The children were having meals at a coffee shop then," he said.

ACP Soffian added that the police would investigate the case under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both, if found guilty.
