Cabinet to meet early over high cost of living, chicken supply issue, says PM

PETALING JAYA: The government will bring forward its weekly Cabinet meeting, which usually takes place on Wednesday, to Monday (May 23) to discuss the rising prices of essential goods and the issue of chicken supply, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic).

The Prime Minister said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry would present short-term and long-term plans at the meeting.

“We will not only focus on the issue of chicken supply but we will also look at two things, which is our cost of living that we predict will increase. This is a global phenomenon due to the war (Russia-Ukraine)," he said in a press conference after launching the International Symposium on Bahasa Melayu at Wisma Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka on Sunday (May 22).

Ismail Sabri said the government would also look at abolishing other Approved Permits (AP) to address issues of food supply and prices.

"I have abolished the AP (for the import of foodstuff), so maybe we will look into the other APs as well," he said.

On May 20, the PM announced that the government agreed not to impose AP on the import of foodstuff with immediate effect.

He said the decision was reached in the Cabinet meeting chaired by him, to ensure sufficient food supply in the country.
