Ehailing driver held for allegedly molesting passenger in JB

JOHOR BARU: A 33-year-old ehailing driver has been arrested by the police here after a passenger said he had molested her.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the suspect was picked up at about 12.30am on Thursday (May 19) following a police report filed by a 23-year-old woman.

He said the victim had booked the ehailing service at about 2am on May 17 to go to Permas Jaya from a mall here.

She said the suspect asked her to move to the front passenger seat several times but she refused as she was worried about her safety, said ACP Raub.

"However, she relented when the driver continued to pester her.

"When she was seated in front, the suspect touched her breasts several times," he said in a statement here on Thursday (May 19).

ACP Raub added that the woman later managed to escape and left the car.

"We have arrested the suspect for further investigation and have also seized a phone and a car," he said.

An investigation is being carried out under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outraging the modesty of another, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, or a fine, or whipping, upon conviction.

ACP Raub reminded the public, especially women, to be careful when using ehailing services alone.
