Over 1,700 bitcoin mining machines disposed of by Kedah cops


ALOR STAR: More than 1,700 bitcoin mining machines along with other equipment, the subject of 21 different investigation papers, have been disposed of.

Kedah police chief Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said the equipment comprised 1,773 bitcoin mining machines, 14 modems, 37 desktop switches, 14 routers, three laptops, seven computers, two bitcoin mining machine castings and two CCTVs.

“The 21 investigation papers were under Section 407 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“The inquiry for the investigations was approved by the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court from September 2021 to April 2022.

“The disposal involved seized bitcoin mining machines and equipment at raids carried out at 21 locations around Alor Setar together with 38 raids by the police and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) during Ops Letrik.

“The raids were carried out for several offences including electricity theft, tampering of electrical meters or connections, damage to meters, equipment or installations, and power supply lines,” he said.

Comm Wan Hassan added that follow-up actions will be carried out under Section 38 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 or Licensee Supply Regulations 1990 by TNB.
