Depot riot: 432 escapees rearrested so far, 96 still at large


BANDAR BAHARU: The authorities have rearrested 432 undocumented migrants who escaped from the temporary Immigration depot here on Wednesday (April 20), says Kedah police chief Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad.

Comm Wan Hassan said as of Friday (April 22) morning, 96 escapees comprising 76 men, nine women and 11 children are still at large.

He said as of 6am on Friday, a total of 23 detainees were still at the Relau temporary Immigration depot.

By midnight on Thursday (April 21), a total of 448 detainees had been transferred to four separate Immigration depots: Langkap in Perak, Machap Umboo in Melaka, and Semenyih and Bukit Jalil in Selangor.

On Wednesday, a protest at around 5am at the Relau detention centre by Rohingya detainees quickly turned into a riot.

During the escape, six detainees including two children were killed on the southbound side of the North-South Expressway while trying to cross the highway near Jawi.

A total of 14 police special team members and 350 General Operations Force (GOF) personnel have been deployed to locate the detainees still at large.
