Johor cops: Video of Singaporean 'robbery victim' is fake

JOHOR BARU: An old video clip of an injured Singaporean is being circulated via social media to cause fear and alarm especially among people coming into Malaysia from Singapore, says the Johor police chief.

Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the video showing a man being robbed and injured has been surfacing periodically on social media since 2014.

“Police have actually dismissed this as fake news via an official statement on Nov 2 last year,” he said here on Sunday (April 3).

Comm Kamarul Zaman advised the public not to fall for such messages from unverified sources.

He added that those spreading false information could face a fine of up to RM50,000, one year's jail or both if found guilty of an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Malaysia and Singapore reopened their borders to vaccinated travellers on Friday (April 1) after a closure of more than two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
