A colleague who witnessed the incident said Lim slipped and fell into the river.

"Upon arrival at the scene, we were informed by a witness that the victim was seen trying to stay afloat. One of his friends tried to rescue him but failed," he said.

He added that a search and rescue (SAR) operation was mounted with a surface search carried out jointly with Marine Police.

The Fire and Rescue team also ordered all ships anchored at the pier to be moved to other locations to facilitate the search effort.

"The search had to stop at 8pm as it was dark and weather conditions were poor," he said.

According to Suna, the victim was wearing a blue T-shirt and dark blue trousers, the company uniform.

The SAR operation resumed early Friday morning.
