Elderly man loses RM200,000 in credit card scam

KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly man lost RM200,000 over a credit card ruse used by scammers.

Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Asst Comm Mohd Mahidisham Ishak said the 83-year-old man was contacted by a "bank representative", who claimed his name was used to register a platinum credit card on Feb 25.

"The call was then transferred to a ‘Bank Negara officer’, who said a police report was lodged on the matter and he would assist in cancelling the card.

"The victim was then told to give his online banking user ID, password and the One Time Password (OTP)," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 8).

The victim then checked with the bank customer service and discovered there were 14 transactions from his bank account amounting to RM200,000, he said.

"The victim lodged a police report and we are investigating under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he added.

ACP Mohd Mahidisham urged the public to be more vigilant to avoid being duped by Macau Scam.

"If you have any information on any crime or suspicious activity, contact the KL police hotline at 03-2146 0584/0585, the CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-2610 1559/1599, WhatsApp CCID hotline at 013-2111 222, semakmule.rmp.gov.my or any nearest police station."
