There’s still a ban on fireworks, public told

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have reminded people that it is illegal to keep, sell and buy firecrackers and fireworks.

“We want to remind people about the ban which is in effect for all festive celebrations, especially with Chap Goh Meh around the corner,” said Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan (pic).

“Only pop-pop and Happy Boom-type fireworks are allowed because they do not contain flammable substance which could pose a danger,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that the sale of such fireworks required permits from the relevant district police headquarters and must follow set specifications.

“Those owning, selling or playing with illicit fireworks could be liable to action under Section 7 and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

“They could face a maximum seven years’ jail or a fine of not more than RM10,000 or both, upon conviction,” he said.

Comm Abd Jalil said playing with illegal fireworks could also lead to a maximum one month’s jail or a RM100 fine or both under Section 3(5) of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

“We urge the public to follow the law in order to ensure harmony and public order while avoiding any untoward incidents,” he added.
