GEORGE TOWN: Police here have arrested five men over a fight between a group of car towing workers at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway on Wednesday (Jan 26).
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the suspects are aged between 26 and 50, and were detained in various parts of the city shortly after the incident.
He said an investigation found that 20 men were involved in the fight after the accident, and it was caused by a misunderstanding over which group had the right to tow the vehicles involved in the crash.
ACP Soffian said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 27) that personnel from the district police headquarters were unable to stop the fight, adding that those involved fled once the police motorcycle unit and mobile patrol vehicles arrived.
He said police seized items such as crash helmets and motorcycle fork locks, believed to have been used by the suspects as weapons.
"We will seek a remand order against the detained suspects later at the Magistrate's Court," he said, adding that police are tracking the remaining suspects involved in the fight.
ACP Soffian said the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.
Prior to this, videos of the fight went viral on social media, with the fight breaking out after an accident between a lorry carrying mosaic tiles and two cars on the expressway.
