Clusters rise 313.3% at educational institutions

PETALING JAYA: A 313.3% increase was recorded among Covid-19 clusters at educational institutions in epidemiology week three, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. The Health director-general said 62 new clusters were recorded at educational institutions, 18 at workplaces, four at high-risk centres and one each from communities, detention centres and import cases.

This brought the total number of active clusters nationwide to 225, a 27.8% increase compared to epidemiology week two.

“The increasing clusters at educational institutions is very worrying due to the composition of individuals from different backgrounds being together at the same time and place,” Dr Noor Hisham said.

He added that the number of beds taken up at Covid-19 treatment centres had increased compared to epidemiology week two.

There was, however, a decrease in the number of beds used in both intensive care units and non-intensive care units with no changes recorded for individuals requiring respiratory assistance.

On the infectivity rate, he said the national R-nought stood at 1.08 with 10 states and territories recording a rate of 1.0 and above.

These were Negri Sembilan (1.14), Kuala Lumpur (1.09), Kedah (1.08), Melaka (1.08), Johor (1.08), Selangor (1.04), Penang (1.02), Pahang (1.02) and Perak (1.0).

Perlis, Sarawak and Labuan recorded zero infectivity rate.

Meanwhile, 10,701,460 individuals or 45.7% of adults in the country have received the Covid-19 booster dose, according to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal, which stated that 129,378 booster doses were administered on Sunday.

A total of 22,915,836 individuals or 97.9% of the adult population have completed their vaccination, while 23,193,511 individuals or 99.1% of the group have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

For adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, 2,780,413 individuals or 88.3% have completed their vaccination while 2,864,161 individuals or 91% have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The ministry’s Github portal recorded nine deaths on Sunday.
