GEORGE TOWN: The marine police arrested a Bangladeshi national and seized contraband cigarettes and alcohol worth more than RM130,000.
Its Penang Region One commander, Asst Comm Shamsol Kassim said the suspect was arrested during a special operation in conjunction with Chinese New Year at an area in Central Seberang Prai on Monday (Jan 24).
"During the raid, we discovered 11 boxes containing 590 cartons of contraband cigarettes or equivalent to 216,800 sticks of cigarettes worth RM 123,490.00.
"We also found 17 boxes of alcoholic drinks or 143.4 litres of various brands worth RM 9,970," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 25).
ACP Shamsul said the confiscated items were worth RM133,460 in total.
He said the suspect was handed over to the Central Seberang Prai police for further investigation.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.
