ALOR SETAR: A total of 106 students of Maktab Mahmud in Tobiar here have tested positive for Covid-19.

State health committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman said the infections had triggered a new cluster called Dah Penyarom.

"The affected students have been sent to the Low-Risk Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRC) in Kulim and Dewan Wawasan in Jitra," he said when contacted.

Dr Mohd Hayati said the cases were detected after several female students showed symptoms of Covid-19 while sitting for their examinations.

"Upon the completion of their exams, they went for Covid-19 screening and the results came back positive.

"The school then conducted tests on all the hostel students and so far, 106 have been found positive with the virus," he said.

He added that there are still students who have yet to receive their Covid-19 test results and have been ordered to wear pink bracelets and be quarantined in their dormitory.

Dr Mohd Hayati calls on the public not to panic as measures have been taken to contain the spread of the virus.

"The school and hostel buildings have been sanitised," he said.

He also reminded the public not to let their guard down and to continue to follow standard operating procedure to avoid infection.
