JPJ to launch e-testing for learner drivers in April

PUTRAJAYA: Those intending to take their driving licences from April may do so through the automated driving test or “e-testing”, says Road Transport Dept (JPJ) director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim.

"The system is currently undergoing trials and is expected to be launched in April.

"Those taking their driving test through the system will be able to get their results immediately as the tests will be conducted in real time.

"This will speed up the process tremendously compared to the previous two-week waiting time for test results," he told reporters after delivering his New Year message to JPJ officers here on Monday (Jan 17).

He added that the system would also help reduce the need for JPJ personnel to be present at driving tests.

"At present, six to seven JPJ officers are needed to evaluate drivers when they take their driving tests.

"With e-testing, we will reduce this to two or three officers.

"This will allow the department to utilise the extra manpower for enforcement and other work," he said.

He added that the e-testing system will be based on the current six-point physical driving test.

"Those tested will have to perform tasks such as parking, driving uphill and making a three-point turn, but through simulations," he said.

The system will be implemented gradually with the 232 driving schools nationwide free to take up the e-testing application from service providers.

On a separate matter, Zailani said JPJ was carrying out advocacy with the Road Safety Department to engage p-hailing companies and educate delivery riders on safety.

He noted that there were frequent instances of delivery riders running a red light while making deliveries.

"They are pressed for time and don't care," he said.

He noted that when JPJ conducted Ops Merah late last year to target errant delivery riders, some 2,500 summonses were issued for those who ran the red light.

It was reported that there were 3,118 road deaths involving motorcyclists in 2020, more than 60% of the total 4,364 fatal accidents.

On revenue, Zailani said JPJ managed to collect RM4bil last year.

"It's considered a miracle what we achieved considering the Covid-19 pandemic, year-end floods and discounts given on summonses," he noted.

He said the department had set a revenue collection target of RM4.12bil this year.
