Floods: Number of evacuees rises in Johor, says Exco member


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has increased to 5,442 people from 1,476 families at 4am on Tuesday (Jan 4), compared with 4,865 people from 1,328 families at midnight.

State Health and Environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said five more temporary reliefcentres (PPS) were opened bringing the total number to 78 from 73.

He said Segamat has the highest number of flood victims with 3,988 people from 1,086 familiestaking refuge at 52 PPS.

Vidyananthan said Mersing has 548 victims from 142 families at seven PPS, Kota Tinggi with 210 people from 61 families at three PPS and 434 people from 111 families in Tangkak at 10 PPS.

He added that there are 107 victims from 31 families in Batu Pahat at three PPS, while Kluang has 97 people from 30 families at one PPS and Muar has with 58 people from 15 families taking shelter at three PPS.

“Two temporary relief centres in Kluang were closed on Monday (Jan 3)’’ Vidyananthan said in a statement.

The centres are Balairaya Kampung Muhibbah, Paloh which opened on Sunday (Jan 2) at 6pm and closed on Monday at 11pm and Balai Komuniti Kampung Melayu Batu 4, Paloh which opened on Sunday at 5.30pm and closed on Monday at 11pm.

Vidyananthan said that the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had issued warnings about continuous heavy rain in Johor that is expected to occur on Tuesday (Jan 4).

He said there are four rivers in Segamat which are still at dangerous levels – Sungai Muar in Kampung Awat at 21.74m, Sungai Muar, Buloh Kasap at 11.01m, Sungai Segamat in Segamat town at 10.25m and Sungai Lenik, Ladang Chaah at 6.87m.

“Sungai Kesang, Kampung Seri Maamor in Tangkak is also at a dangerous level at 4.33m,” said Vidyananthan.

He also said that three roads in Segamat and one in Kota Tinggi are only accessible by heavy vehicles namely Jalan Serakek, Jalan Tungku Tiga and Jalan Pogoh Kampung Limau Manis and Jalan Mawai Lama in Kota Tinggi.

Jalan Lingkaran Kahang Barat in Kluang is only accessible by light vehicles as there is a landslide in the area.

Aside from this, several roads in Segamat remain closed; Jalan Kuala Raya Balai Badang, Jalan Putting, Jalan Jabi Kampung Bukit Tempurong, Jalan Felda Medoi Surau Kampung Logah, Jalan Senai-Gemas (opposite the Ajiya glass factory) and Jalan Felda Medoi at the Jalan Maharani intersection.
