Johor’s Southern Volunteers provide humanitarian aid to help Selangor flood victims

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government, through its Southern Volunteers, have deployed humanitarian aid to help flood victims in Selangor.

State government deputy secretary On Jabbar, who is Southern Volunteers humanitarian aid chief contingent, said that a total of 37 volunteers have been sent to Hulu Langat to aid victims there.

“We are holding talks with the Selangor government, which informed us that many flood victims are currently being placed at temporary relief centres in Hulu Langat.

“They need basic needs such as mineral water, diapers for babies and adults, sanitary pads, biscuits and bread,” he said when met during the flagging off ceremony here on Monday (Dec 20).

On said about RM50,000 worth of aid would be channeled to the Selangor government represented by the Hulu Langat district officer in helping the victims.

He also said that they would also be discussing with the Selangor government on what other help they would be requesting from the Johor government.

"This is the first phase of aid that we are giving, while for the second phase, we are hoping to get approval in carrying out cleaning works on houses affected with flood waters.

“For that, we are waiting for the green light from the Selangor government on when and how many volunteers are needed from us,” he said, adding that there were more than 20,000 Southern Volunteers members throughout Johor.

On Sunday (Dec 19), in a show of solidarity, the Johor non-governmental organisation Southern Volunteers deployed to flood-hit areas around the country to boost relief efforts.

Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim said the volunteers were sent to states hit by the natural disaster to assist in relief work.

"I am aware of the flood disaster that has struck six states.

"I have also ordered the Southern Volunteers to be ready to be deployed in flood-affected areas to help with cleaning efforts and the distribution of essential needs.

"Let's pray for the safety and Allah SWT's blessings for all the flood victims," he said in a Facebook post.

He also expressed his hope for the authorities to provide help to all those affected.

"Attention must be placed on flood prevention immediately," he added.

Thousands have been affected by the worsening floods in six states, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Melaka.
