24-hour downpour is a ‘one in 100-year weather event’

KUALA LUMPUR: The downpours that lasted over 24 hours that began late Friday night was equal to the average rainfall for a month, which is a one in 100-year weather event.

Environment and Water Ministry (KASA) secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang said the phenomenon occurred due to monsoon flow factors and a low pressure weather system that achieved the level of a tropical depression that formed in the South China Sea that was detected by the Meteorological Department on Dec 12.
