SOP on gym reopening in Phases Two and Three states being finalised

IPOH: Gyms in states under Phase Two and Three of the National Recovery Plan will be allowed to operate once the standard operating procedure (SOP) has been gazetted, says Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker.

He said only those who are fully vaccinated will be allowed in.

The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister said those operating gyms would need to adhere to existing Covid-19 SOP like observing physical distancing, wearing face masks and sanitising hands and equipment.

"Operators need to be fully vaccinated to open their premises," he said in a press conference after opening a blood donation programme organised by non-governmental organisation Gopeng Youth at AEON Kinta City shopping mall here on Thursday (Sept 16).

"Gyms will only be open for fully-vaccinated people," he said, adding that both outdoor and indoor sporting activities will also be allowed to resume.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu had last week appealed to Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to allow gyms and outdoor sports facilities to reopen.

Ti said there would be some additional SOP for gyms and sports facility operators.

“Once the SOP has been gazetted and published, the operators are allowed to open,” he said.

"There were some initial concerns by the Health Ministry about ventilation issues but these are being resolved," he added.
