PETALING JAYA: Umno supreme council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob should not have called for a meeting of Barisan Nasional lawmakers, saying the latter is only a party vice-president.

"He is not the president or the deputy president.

"He is also not Barisan Nasional's chairman.

"Ismail Sabri is the Deputy Prime Minister. But this is not a ticket for him to bulldoze (past) the Umno president and Barisan chairman.

"He needs consent first from the Umno president (on anything) regarding the party," Puad said in a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 2).

Earlier, Sinar Harian reported that 30 Barisan MPs are believed to have signed a declaration letter supporting Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as Prime Minister.

The Malay news portal reported that the secret meeting where the letter was signed took place at Wisma Perwira at 9pm on Sunday (Aug 1) night.

It was reportedly chaired by Barisan Nasional Backbenchers' Club chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

Puad added that any meetings of Umno and Barisan lawmakers require prior agreement from the president and chairman respectively.

"How can the vice president hold a meeting at the same time the president (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also BN chairman) is holding another meeting?" asked Puad.

"What more when the matter touches on party policies and decisions that have already been made by the Umno supreme council?

"Do not change the decision of the supreme council.

"There cannot be two captains (on the same boat). Umno will be split," he added.
