LARUT: Public figures who encouraged the people to protest despite an ongoing pandemic practise double standards, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

"I noticed some who complained about us allowing factory workers to work are the same people who encouraged others to demonstrate. This is a double standard," said Hamzah.

"I am worried that if the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) are not practised in the demonstration, it can lead to an outbreak," he said when speaking to reporters at the Selama district police headquarters here on Saturday (July 31).

Earlier on Saturday, several groups wearing black outfits were seen heading towards Dataran Merdeka for the #Lawan demonstration.

On Friday (July 30), Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said the police will take action against those planning to attend the demonstration.

Hamzah said action will be taken against those who are found breaking the SOP during the protest.

"I have instructed the police to monitor the scene. We are still in the middle of breaking the Covid-19 chain, so I hope everyone will take good care of themselves," he said.

"We don't know how many people might get infected with Covid-19 from this demonstration. Perhaps only then these people will realise the danger of gathering in the middle of the pandemic," added Hamzah.
