NILAI: Police are looking for the individual who allegedly blackmailed a member of a political party with threats of posting a video clip and photographs on social media.
Nilai district police chief Supt Mohd Fazley Ab Rahman said police received a report from the complainant on May 29.
"The member of the political party was apparently blackmailed into depositing a sum of money into a bank account, failing which a video clip and pictures of him would be posted on social media.
"We are now looking for the suspect to assist in our probe," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 3).
Supt Mohd Fazley said the case was being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping, or any of the two, upon conviction.
On Wednesday (June 2), a group of Negri Sembilan Umno members asked the party to probe a state leader who was apparently featured performing a sexual act in a clip which has since gone viral. No one else appears in the clip.
Seremban Umno vice chief Mazalan Maarof said a report has been sent to the party disciplinary board and the state liaison committee on the matter.
Mazalan said the division sent the reports because it is concerned the matter could affect the party's image.
Mazalan said division members have also been trying to get in touch with the individual concerned but their calls went unanswered.
He claimed that the individual also left some chat groups after the clip started making the rounds.
