GEORGE TOWN: Police detained a man believed to be part of a drug-smuggling syndicate and seized drugs worth RM3.5mil at Kepala Batas, here.
State police chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abdul Manan said the 21-year-old suspect was detained by a team of police from state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at an area near Jalan Bertam at about 6pm on Wednesday (May 19).
"The arrest of the suspect led us to a shophouse at Taman Bukit Minyak in Bukit Tengah where we found 97.14kg of syabu, 190g of heroin, and a pistol with two magazines containing 15 live bullets.
"We also found an assortment of liquid chemicals and drug processing equipment," he said in a statement on Friday (May 21).
Comm Sahabudin said the confiscated drugs were worth RM3.5mil and can be used by 486,000 addicts.
Comm Sahabudin said the drugs were believed to be for the local market and police believe that the syndicate has been active since January this year.
He said the case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and Section 8 of the Firearm Act 1971.
He added that the suspect was also being investigated under Section 363 of the Penal Code for a kidnapping case in Butterworth.
