Three probationary cops remanded seven days in probe on colleague’s death

SIBU: Three probationary police constables have been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation into the death of their colleague on Thursday (May 6).

The trio, aged 21,23 and 27, were produced at a Magistrate’s Court here on Friday (May 7) and ordered to be remanded under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said Norhalim Tumiran, 25, was found with gunshot wounds on his right ear at a house in Lorong 9, Permai, on Thursday.

He said the initial investigation found it was a case of accidental shooting that led to the victim’s death, but the probe is ongoing.

"The deceased was accidentally shot by a colleague while playing computer games in the sitting room of the house. The investigation is being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department," he said.

A police team rushed to the house after receiving a report on the incident around 7pm.

"The deceased had just started working six weeks ago in the Motorcycle Patrol Unit of the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department of Sibu, together with five others," he said.

ACP Stanley said the rented house was occupied by five friends of the deceased. Two of them were out on duty during the incident.

The deceased, who was a close friend of the five, was not staying there but at the Sibu Police Headquarters.

"Before the incident, the deceased came to the rented house to play computer games before breaking fast with the others," he said.

The deceased, who is from Lanchang, Pahang, leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old toddler.
