JOHOR BARU: State police chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, known for his no-nonsense approach to fighting crime, showed his lighter side as he flipped dough to make roti canai.
A minute and four seconds video has gone viral on social media.
Taking part in the Johor Media Club’s (KMJ) Singgah Sahur programme held over the weekend, he impressed journalists present with his skill at the state police contingent headquarters here.
Equally wowed were Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad and Education, Information, Heritage and Culture Committee chairman Mazlan Bujang, who were among those present.
Revealing the “secret” behind his ability, Comm Ayob said that he had helped his late father as a 12-year-old at the family’s restaurant in Pendang, Kedah.
“Even when I was studying at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, I made roti canai part-time to earn extra money.
“During semester breaks, I would go back to Kedah and help both my late father and late brother-in-law at the restaurant, ” he said.
In an Instagram post, Comm Ayob posted a picture of him as a young boy in the late 1970s making roti canai next to his father at the family restaurant.
“We cannot forget who we are, or where we came from, ” he posted.
Comm Ayob said he was glad to take part in the event, saying it helped create a closer bond between the police and media.
“Cooperation such as this enables us to provide better information to the public. The media has contributed greatly in terms of being an ally of the Johor police, ” he added.
KMJ president Mohamad Fauzi Ishak said the Johor police headquarters were among four locations they visited with Hasni and Mazlan.
He said Hasni, who is the KMJ patron, Mazlan and club members handed over 200 sahur meals to frontliners at four locations, which included the Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre at the Pasir Gudang Indoor Stadium and state Fire and Rescue Department headquarters.
“We wanted to show our appreciation and support, ” he added.
