ALOR GAJAH: A 29-year-old man doused his friend with petrol and set him alight - all over the suspected theft of a smartphone.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu said the 23-year-old victim, from Taman Lendu Bakti here, suffered serious burns in the arson attack.

He said the suspect entered the victim’s room at 4.40pm on Tuesday (March 9) carrying a cigarette lighter and a bottle of petrol.

He added that the suspect believed his lover's smartphone had been stolen by the victim.

“The victim was then set on fire and was seriously burned on the left hand, right wrist, neck and back, ” Supt Arshad said on Thursday (March 11).

He said the victim was rushed to Alor Gajah Hospital before being referred to the Epidemiological Unit of Melaka Hospital.

The victim lodged a police report as soon as he was discharged on Thursday, he added.

The suspect is on the run and police have launched a manhunt to track him down, Supt Arshad said.
