Former Melaka CM reelected as ICLEI advisor


MELAKA: Melaka rural development, flood management and green technology committee chairman Datuk Seri Idris Haron has been reelected as part of the Local Government for Sustainability's (ICLEI) Global Executive Committee from 2021 to 2024 for the second time.

Idris, who was the former chief minister, will hold the position as advisor to the Resilient Development and Risk Management portfolio of ICLEI.

Apart from Idris, President of Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) Datuk Shadan Othman was also elected as advisor to ICLEI's Circular Development portfolio.

ICLEI, is an international council of local environmental initiatives and has a network at more than 1,500 cities, towns and regions.

The objective of the eminent organisation is to turn cities into

sustainable, low-carbon, resilient, eco-mobile, bio-diversified,

resource-efficient, as well as encouraging green economy and smart infrastructure.

Idris said he will continue to bring in new ideas to improve the well-being of the locals.

"I am really honoured to be given another opportunity to be part of ICLEI," he said on Saturday (Feb 20).

In 2018, Idris was the first Asian to be elected as a member of ICLEI's 2018-2021 Global Executive Committee.
