Jalan Universiti renamed to Jalan Prof Diraja Ungku Aziz

PETALING JAYA: Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has given consent for Jalan Universiti to be renamed Jalan Prof Diraja Ungku Aziz.

In a statement posted on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook on Thursday (Dec 31), it said the changes would take effect immediately.

The Ruler said the decision to change the name of the road was to immortalise and commemorate contributions of the late Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid during his lifetime in the field of education and the Malay economy.

"For that, His Majesty has also agreed to meet with Prof Ungku's daughter, YBhg Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, to convey His Majesty's wishes and his decision to change the name of the road.

"The decision to rename Jalan Universiti to Jalan Prof Road Ungku Aziz is appropriate as it is the main gateway to higher learning institutions such as University Malaya, International Islamic University and Mahsa University," the statement said.

The Royal Office noted that the late Ungku Abdul Aziz served as a lecturer at the University of Malaya (Singapore) from 1952 to 1961, before being appointed to the position of professor and then Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University Malaya (Kuala Lumpur) from 1962 to 1965.

"Jalan Universiti stretches for 3.2km and is the main road connecting Petaling Jaya to Kuala Lumpur.

"It was built in 1960 and is the first bilateral road in Malaysia," it noted, adding that the road connects to other major roads such as the Federal Highway, Jalan Prof Khoo Kay Kim, Jalan Dato' Abu Bakar (Jalan 16/1) and Jalan Harapan.
