KUCHING: Sarawakian artiste Alena Murang has been nominated for two awards at the Buenos Aires Music Video Festival.
Her Midang Midang music video is in the running for the Best International Video - alongside Madonna - and Best Styling categories at the Nov 27-29 festival.
State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the nominations spoke great volumes about Alena's artistry and musical talent.
"We are thrilled with the nominations for Alena and her team. It means a lot to all of us in Sarawak when stories about our unique local communities are shared on international music platforms.
"Alena was right when she said that the music video which shows the Kelabit highlands is still making its way to a prestigious festival and on the global stage even during the Covid-19 pandemic," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 17).
Midang Midang is an old Kelabit song which Alena learnt from her great aunt about a young girl watching leaves dry in the sun.
The music video was produced by Project Room and Kanid and it was shot in the Kelabit highlands and Miri.
According to Karim, the Midang Midang music video was launched on Nov 27 last year with the support of the Sarawak Tourism Board and Miri City Council.
"Even though the Buenos Aires Music Video Festival is based in Argentina and will be held virtually, millions of netizens are expected to follow the proceedings on social media platforms.
"This augurs well for the promotion of Sarawak as a tourist destination.
"With over 29,000 views on YouTube, we hope Alena's music video will continue to become the window for the rest of the world to see how much Sarawak's tourism has to offer and for Sarawak to become a must-visit destination once the Covid-19 situation improves," he said.
