Abandoned baby girl found alive inside a bag at Penang flats

GEORGE TOWN: A baby girl weighing about 3.2kg was found abandoned at a block of flats in Paya Terubong, Ayer Itam here.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said police received a report about a baby who was found inside a bag at about 12.40pm Sunday (Nov 1).

"The baby's name, age and race are unknown," he said adding that the baby was found in the area where the mailboxes are located.

"A 29-year-old man, who lives in a nearby block, found the baby inside a backpack wrapped in black plastic and placed on the mailboxes.

"The baby was still alive and wrapped in a white towel. Her umbilical cord was already cut and there were no documents in the bag," he said.

Medical officers who arrived later found no injuries on the baby and took her to the Penang Hospital for further monitoring.

ACP Soffian said the area where the baby was abandoned is not covered by CCTV and there is no security guard.

No other eyewitnesses have come forward yet.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for child abandonment.
