PETALING JAYA: Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) has won the 2020 DX Leader Award in recognition of its digital transformation initiative.
The company clinched the award at the country-level competition of the fourth annual IDC Digital Transformation Awards Malaysia.
The DX Leader category acknowledges the leadership of executive or executives within the organisation in setting the vision and executing the digital transformation efforts.
SMG senior general manager of analytics Freddy Loo, who received the award, said the win was a pleasant surprise for the analytics team.
“We are a fairly new set-up that’s only been around for two years. So we are grateful as it is a testament to the work that the organisation is doing,” he said.
The team, he added, was set up to help SMG meet the challenges of the media industry.
Within two years of its inception, the team has laid the foundation on how to use technology to collect data and use data for decision-making, he said.
“We are now more informed about what is happening by keeping a pulse on the business.
“The team is focused on making sure we can use data to help provide a better experience for our readers. This is where we work very closely with content.
“We now understand our customers better – how they consume information, what information they like, when they read, how they read, and even how it is written. We analyse that so that editors are able to provide a more meaningful experience to readers,” he explained.
Loo said his team also pushed ahead with initiatives such as online subscriptions and targeted advertisements.
Apart from the DX Leader category, the other awards are Digital Transformer, Digital Disruptor, Information Visionary, Operating Model Master, Omni-Experience Innovator, Talent Accelerator, DX CEO, and DX Gamechanger.
Country winners will qualify for the regional competition that will be decided by a panel of judges comprising IDC analysts, industry practitioners, thought leaders and academia around the world.
The country winners are announced today, and the regional (Asia-Pacific) winners on Oct 23 at the IDC Arena in Singapore.
