KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pic) has apologised to all members of the security forces, as well as their families, after one of the party's candidates, Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, uttered remarks said to belittle security personnel during the 2013 Tanduo intrusion into the state.
“As president of Warisan and (caretaker) Chief Minister, I want to apologise to all members of the security forces, their families and all Malaysians over the statement by one of the party members, ” he said in a statement Tuesday (Sept 22).
The Segama candidate's spontaneous remarks were misunderstood and were not aimed at belittling the security forces who sacrificed their lives to defend the country and the people, said Shafie.
“As a former deputy defence minister, I am fully aware of the sacrifices made by our security forces in defending the nation and many of whom have to be placed in distant and isolated outposts with minimal amenities, ” he added.
“Each of our security forces personnel placed in such areas are ready not only to sacrifice their lives to keep Malaysia safe, but also have to be away from their families during their deployment to these remote outposts, ” he added.
Shafie also said as Chief Minister, he understood and appreciated the role of the security forces as frontliners helping to check the spread of the unseen enemy known as Covid-19.
“We appreciated their sacrifices, and the state government set aside RM10mil to be shared between all frontliners, including RM1mil for the police and another RM1mil for the army.
“Sabah was the only state in the country to provide such additional funds for the security forces during Covid-19, ” he added.
“The amount is not much compared to the risk and sacrifices of the security forces, but it clearly shows that the Sabah government was appreciative of their contribution, even though security was under the Federal Government, ” he added.
Mohamaddin, the candidate for Segama, has apologised after a 90-second video clip showed him belittling the 2013 Tanduo intrusion as just a show" while on his campaign trail in Segama.
The Lahad Datu MP, who is contesting in an eight-cornered fight, claimed that the 2013 shootout with Sulu militants was “just a show” to gain votes and help Barisan Nasional win the 13th General Election.
Mohamaddin said the video clip was taken out of context and was spread by people who wanted to see Warisan lose the election.
He said his words were not meant to offend the security forces but to throw a spotlight on Barisan’s failure to properly secure Sabah’s borders.
“It was never my intention to trivialise nor disgrace our security forces who fought bravely to protect our land from invaders, ” he said on Monday.
