MIRI: The Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperative Affairs Ministry seized numerous drums of diesel and a vehicle from a driver caught hoarding the fuel here.

The ministry's enforcement chief in Miri, Joe Azmi, said his officers seized 1,358 litres of diesel and a four-wheel drive vehicle from a man caught red-handed buying the fuel in bulk without a permit.

"The case happened at a petrol station in Lambir (on the outskirts of Miri city).

"The diesel is worth about RM2,500 and the vehicle is valued around RM50,000.

"The man was filling up big drums when he was caught and he did not have any written permit to buy fuel in bulk," he told reporters here Saturday (Aug 1).

The man is being probed for illegal hoarding of fuel, Joe said.

He added that the ministry only issues permits to buy fuel in bulk to longhouse folks using generators (to generate electricity).

"We also issue such permits for those in the fishing and agriculture sectors and for industrial use such as operating forklifts," he said.

He said the ministry needs to curb the practice of illegal buying of fuel in bulk.

This is to protect the interest of the general public, Joe said.
