ALOR SETAR: A newborn girl was found abandoned behind a house at Kampung Sakan here on Sunday (June 28) morning.
Abdul Shukkur Ali Akbar, 52, said he found the baby girl wrapped inside a cloth and was placed on a wooden bench behind his house at about 7.15am.
"I had come out from the back door of my house to feed my chicken after performing my prayers.
"I saw something wrapped inside a blue batik sarong placed on the bench.
"I thought my children had brought back newborn kittens from elsewhere and called them out to check. None of them said they brought back any kittens," added Shukkur, a Rohingya contract worker.
He said one of his children - 24-year-old Najmuddin Abdul Alim - then used a bamboo stick to unfurl the blue sarong batik.
"To our shock, a baby was found wrapped inside the sarong. A neighbour then alerted the police over the matter.
"The police arrived at our house at about 8.30am to carry out an investigation followed by an ambulance from the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital at about 10.30am.
"When the baby was found, she didn't cry," said Shukkur.
Acting Kota Setar OCPD Supt Mohd Redzuan Salleh confirmed the case when contacted.
He said the case will be investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by a parent or person having care of it or custodian, which carries a maximum seven-year jail term or fine,"
This is the fourth baby dumping case in Kedah that was reported by The Star since 2019.
