Mat Sabu: Pakatan must unite to prepare for a possible snap election

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan must come together with former Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) to prepare for snap election, says Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu.

He said the unity of the Opposition was important in order to win the mandate of the people in the next general election.

"It is the duty of Pakatan, with the coalition of Dr Mahathir and his team, as well as Warisan, to make an effort to take back the mandate and rights of the people which was given to them in the last general election.

"Amanah is concerned about the worries of the people over Perikatan, which was set up without the mandate of the people and which has turned its back on good governance, such as abandoning the functions and roles of Parliament as a check-and-balance institution, especially in spending public funds.

"More worrying is the release of individuals linked to corruption charges and abuse of power in a big way, which has given rise to the speculation of political interference in the judiciary," said Mohamad in a press statement on Saturday (June 20).

He said there was a possibility of snap election being called in the near future, and Pakatan should prepare its election machinery as soon as possible.

Mohamad's statement comes in the midst of a deadlock between Pakatan component parties, Dr Mahathir and Warisan over their choice of prime minister candidate should they take over Putrajaya.

On Friday (June 19), PKR insisted its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim be the PM candidate.

However, Amanah and DAP stated that Anwar could only garner a maximum majority of 96 MPs, which was not enough to make him PM.

The two parties said this meant Pakatan should return to a decision made by the presidential council that Dr Mahathir agin be the PM with Anwar as the deputy PM.
