Sikh NGO distributes care packs to homeless in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Toothbrushes, towels, blankets and slippers were among the items distributed to the homeless in the Komtar area by volunteers of United Sikhs, a non-goverment organisation (NGO).

Its president Sunil Singh said he hoped the homeless would put the sanitary items to good use by keeping themselves clean amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

"These are people who have lost their homes and probably basic access to sanitation and warmth.

"While other NGOs provide them food and necessary aid, we try to give them other items," he said on Saturday (June 13).

Sunil, accompanied by 17 members in distributing 30 packs of the items in Komtar, said each kit included mosquito coils, soap, detergent, shampoo and comb.

The group later moved on to Batu Ferringhi where 45 larger similar packs were distributed to trishaw riders.

On Sunday (June 14), the group will organise a drive-thru aid handout at the Gurdwara Sahib on Jalan Kuala Ketil, Sungai Petani in Kedah for 700 people.
