Cops: We have arrested one of two suspects attempting to flee inspection in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested one of the two suspects who attempted to flee a police check along Jalan Genting Klang here on Monday (June 1) afternoon, says city police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

"A police team from Wangsa Maju was conducting conditional movement control order (MCO) compliance checks, when they spotted the two men behaving suspiciously on a motorcycle, ” said Comm Mazlan.

He added that the team tried to stop the suspects, but they ignored the police and sped off heading to Jalan Ampang.

"They chased the suspects, who were showing hand gestures as if to challenge the police," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 2).

He said when the suspects reached the Jalan Ampang interchange near Tasik Ampang Hilir, the suspects started riding into oncoming traffic and lost control of the motorcycle and crashed at the road shoulder.

"When police personnel tried to arrest one of the suspects, he began behaving aggressively and a scuffle ensued. The pillion rider managed to flee the scene by jumping into a large drain there," he said.

He said the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamines and has two prior criminal records for drug related crimes and was wanted in connection with a house break-in at Ampang.

"The suspect has been remanded for four days as police track the whereabouts of the other suspect, ” said Comm Mazlan.

Comm Mazlan added that they have opened investigations under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from dispensing their duties.

A video of the arrest has gone viral on social media showing one of the policemen kicking the suspect.

It also shows another policeman falling of his motorcycle while trying to get off his machine and calm down his colleague.

On the viral video, Comm Mazlan said that an internal investigation is underway to ensure that there were no violation of standard operating procedures during the arrest.

He said that stern action would be taken against any officer or personnel found guilty of violating the standard operating procedure.
