ALOR SETAR: The political development taking place in Kedah will see PAS capturing the state leadership for the second time after seven years.

The Islamist party first helmed the state after the 12th General Election in 2008 until 2013 under the leadership of the late mentri besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak.

However, the party lost to Barisan Nasional in GE13 resulting in the appointment of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as the mentri besar.

PAS will once again return to power with the exit of Mukhriz, paving the way for Jeneri assemblyman Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to take over as Kedah’s new mentri besar.

The stage seems to be set for Muhammad Sanusi to be sworn in before Kedah Ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah today at Wisma Darul Aman here.

There was a flurry of activity at Wisma Darul Aman yesterday as the rehearsal ceremony for the swearing-in of Muhammad Sanusi took place in the presence of the Sultan.

An itinerary of the ceremony was also circulated to the members of the media yesterday.

A familiar face in Kedah politics, Muhammad Sanusi, 46, was the political secretary to Azizan from 2008 to 2013.

Born on Aug 4,1974, the former Kedah Opposition leader and state PAS deputy commissioner 1 holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1998.

He has held the posts of PAS Sik branch chairman and central committee member since 2015.

Prior to entering politics, he was an education officer with Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) from 1998 till 2002 before joining two private firms between 2002 and 2008.

In the 14th General Election in 2018, Muhammad Sanusi won the Jeneri seat, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Mahadzir Abdul Hamid and Pakatan Harapan candidate Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan.

On Tuesday, two assemblymen from PKR, Azman Nasrudin (Lunas) and Dr Robert Ling Kui Ee (Sidam), quit the party and threw their support behind the Perikatan Nasional government.

On the same day, Muhammad Sanusi announced that 19 out of 36 Kedah assemblymen had lost confidence in Mukhriz’s leadership.

Talk then started circulating that Muhammad Sanusi was the man for the top job after 23 state assemblymen proposed him as the new mentri besar.

It was learnt that Mukhriz was scheduled to hold a press conference at Wisma Darul Aman at 10am today.
