ALOR SETAR: A change of government is expected after 36 assemblymen from Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional concluded their meeting with Kedah Ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah at Wisma Darul Aman here on Friday (May 15).
It is understood that Perikatan Nasional is confident that the 15th Mentri Besar of Kedah will be installed this Sunday (May 17) in a private swearing-in ceremony at the building.
Jeneri assemblyman Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is expected to take over the mentri besar post from Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Ayer Hangat assemblyman Juhari Bulat said those who attended the meeting this morning were reps who had pledged their allegiance towards the new state government.
"Those who attended the morning session are the group in support of the new government whereas the group who attended in the evening were the one who are not supporting it," he said when contacted.
Earlier, Pakatan Harapan assemblymen, including Mukhriz, were seen leaving the state administrative building in stages.
Sultan Sallehudin was seen leaving the building in his official car around 5pm.
Not long after that, Mukhriz was seen waving to the press as he left the building without stopping to speak to reporters.
Pakatan representatives were not contactable.
On Wednesday (May 13), three party presidents of Perikatan met the Kedah Ruler to present 23 statutory declarations (SDs) from state assemblymen proposing a new candidate for the Kedah mentri besar post.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, who was present at the meeting at Istana Kedah in Kuala Lumpur, had said the presidents of Umno, PAS and Bersatu informed the Sultan that their parties agreed with the candidate that had been named in the SDs to replace Mukhriz.
At the meeting were Bersatu’s Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Prime Minister, Umno’s Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
It is believed that the 23 state assemblymen have proposed Muhammad Sanusi, who is Kedah PAS deputy commissioner 1, as the new mentri besar.
There are 36 state elected representatives in Kedah, which means the 23 assemblymen make up nearly two-thirds of the state assembly.
On Tuesday (May 12), two assemblymen from PKR, Azman Nasrudin (Lunas) and Dr Robert Ling Kui Ee (Sidam), quit the party and threw their support behind the Perikatan government under the leadership of Muhyiddin.
On the same day, Muhammad Sanusi announced that 19 out of 36 Kedah assemblymen had lost confidence in Mukhriz's leadership.
Under the Kedah state constitution, the MB is appointed by the Sultan on the basis that the Sultan believes the candidate has the support of the majority of the state assembly.
If Mukhriz is ousted, this will be the fourth Pakatan state to fall to Perikatan, after Melaka, Johor and Perak.
