Difficult to celebrate Wesak but may the day strengthen family ties, says PM

PETALING JAYA: Wesak Day celebrations this year face difficulties due to the Covid-19 outbreak, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) but he hopes the occasion will be one that strengthens family ties.

"I want to wish happy Wesak Day to all the Buddhists who are celebrating.

"Such a festival proves that the principles and practices of religions are always respected and valued by all Malaysians.

"This year, Wesak Day is being celebrated in a challenging situation because we are currently in the conditional movement control order (MCO) as we try to curb Covid-19 but I believe those who are celebrating will still be able to celebrate Wesak Day with their families," he said in his Wesak Day message on his Facebook page on Wednesday (May 6).

Muhyiddin hoped that the celebration would be able to strengthen family ties, as well as curb the spread of Covid-19 which had affected people's daily lives.

"It gives me great pleasure to send greetings to all Malaysian Buddhist friends who will be celebrating Wesak tomorrow.

"Wesak is a time for all Buddhist to reflect on the fundamental values of tolerance, compassion and service to humanity that are embodied in the Buddha's life and teachings.

"I wish all Malaysian Buddhist friends a happy celebration with your family. May we all come together and continue to live as one in peace and harmony," he said.

Buddhists will be celebrating Wesak Day this year on Thursday (May 7).
