Waiting for the barber: 13 arrested for defying MCO in Butterworth

KEPALA BATAS: Thirteen men were arrested for breaching the movement control order (MCO) after they were caught waiting for a haircut at a barbershop in Jalan Mengkuang, Butterworth.

Seberang Prai Utara OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the suspects were detained at the shop that was secretly opened for customers on Monday (April 27) at about 3.30pm.

"Acting from a tip-off from the public, a team of police from the North Seberang Prai police headquarters raided the shop," he said in a statement.

ACP Noorzainy said initial investigations revealed that the owner had secretly opened the hair salon and allowed customers to wait for their turn for a haircut.

ACP Noorzainy said in the operation to enforce the MCO, another 20 men were detained for violating the order.

All of them were detained under Regulation 6 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Regulations 2020, Section 342 and Section 269 of the Penal Code.

He also advised the public to adhere to the MCO and the government's efforts to break the chain of Covid-19 infection.

On Sunday (April 26) Penang recorded two new cases of Covid-19 in the North Seberang Prai district, after having zero cases for 11 days, three days shy from being declared a Covid-19 green zone.
