PUTRAJAYA: More than 400 people have been arrested recently for not adhering to the movement control order (MCO), bringing the total number of those detained to 614, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The Defence Minister said while the compliance rate to the MCO has reached 97%, 320 people were arrested on Friday while 162 were detained on Thursday.
“We believe firmer action by the police has contributed to the higher compliance to the MCO. However, arrests show there are still many who do not abide by the order,” he said here yesterday.
Among those detained on Friday were 116 people who took part in Friday prayers despite the directive clearly stating that such activity should not be done during the imposition of the MCO, he added.
Action has also been taken against those who jogged in gated communities as the MCO applies to every Malaysian, he added.
On Friday, the police and the Armed Forces conducted 1,046 roadblocks nationwide and checked 240,544 vehicles.
Ismail Sabri also called out parties who took advantage of the current situation to scam people, cheating victims of RM3mil.
In George Town, Penang police have arrested 53 people for violating the MCO.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan said four of them had since been charged in court on Wednesday and Thursday with voluntarily obstructing a police officer from discharging his public duties under Section 186 of the Penal Code.
“Investigations are still ongoing for the others. We will refer the cases to the state Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office upon completing the probes,” he said.
